The joy of homeschooling

As a homeschool mom I have some good days and some bad days.

Usually the bad days happen when I'm in a bad mood, grouchy, crampy, or am lacking sleep. (The lacking sleep thing seems to be a real problem lately) And sometimes the kids are just bad.

The good days are great days. Everyone gets their work done quickly and quietly. No one fussess, or bugs another one. Those days are a homeschoolers dream.

But the best day is when I get to see the light come on in my childs eye. When, after weeks of work, they finally "get it!". When one of my kids smiles at me, says "I got it!", pumps his fist in the air, or does a little happy dance. Man, those are some great moments!

Yesterday Anna had that moment. Last year I didn't work with her the way I should have and she (and I) have paid the price for it. She was terribly behind on her reading. It wasn't her fault, it was all mine, but I had to get her caught up. And fast!

When she was reading yesterday and wasn't having to sound out every word, not having to ask me for help to complete a new story, the smile on her face and the light in her eyes was almost too much for me to bear!

That moment was when I remembered why I homeschool. It was a great moment in time. One that I have shared with all three of the boys and now Anna.

Oh, the joys of homeschooling!

A little help

Through my years of homeschooling I have met many great women. Some are through with their homeschooling journey, some in the middle of theirs, and others haven't done it very long at all.

These women have shared their thoughts, advice, wisdom, and laughter with me and I have enjoyed knowing them.

One of these great ladies is Angie is the mom of four children. She is funny, beautiful, sweet, caring, articulate, and not afraid to tackle a project. We find the same things amusing, which we get a big kick out of.

Angie has written a little guide that is really great. If you have questions about homeschooling or would just like to remind yourself why you do it, download this pdf file. You'll be glad you did.

Ready or not!

Well, I'm almost ready for school to start.

Almost.

Thursday, Mardel is having their annual summer educational sale. 20% off! I will be heading that way to pick up a couple of books, a cd and a dry erase board.

Why a dry erase board, you might ask. Don't you already have one, you might ask. One day last year I lost my cool and threw my dry erase board. Not across the room, not at the kids. But threw it down. Hard. With force.

I was embarrassed. I told Stephen and he suggested I get a new one. I opted to keep the broken one. As a reminder of what frustration and anger can do.

But I have looked at it for many months. Many months. And I think I now have a handle on the frustration and anger, so I am ready for a new dry erase board.

YAY!!!

After I get those few things 20% off,(Is it really saving much money when I have to drive 1 1/2 hours one way to save the 20%? I don't know. But I'm doing it anyway)I just have to organize Anna's language papers, and read over some of Sam's history and we will be ready.

Ready for a new school year. Ready for jr. high. (Not that our town has jr. high, but I'm old school.)Ready for 4th grade and 1st grade.

Ready or not we start August 16!

A New Start

I've made a decision.

This should come as a surprise to those of you that know me.

I don't make decisions well. Not at all.

And this decision has been a hard one to make.

This is going to be my homeschool blog.

Its a fact. I homeschool my kids.

It doesn't define who I am. I still love public schools. I still love and admire teachers. (Today I took our elementary school principal an orange dreamsicle. She was working outside on this hot day, and I remembered buying dreamsicles from my principle in elementary school. So, I took her one. I like her. We bonded. It was nice!)

Although homeschooling doesn't define me, it is what I do. It is my job. (Well, that and cleaning house, but I don't like that job so I don't want to talk about it.)

This will be my 7th year to homeschool. After 7 years you would think I would have all the answers, or at least some of the answers. But sadly, I don't. I still have more questions than answers.

This year I am going to review curriculum and homeschool products with the Homeschool Crew

Since Samuel is going to be in 7th grade I decided that I needed all the help I could get, and I think that being able to see and review curriculum for him is really going to help me in this adventure called middle school!

I will still post about my kids, my family, and my thoughts. But if homeschooling turns you off, or disinterests you it won't hurt my feelings if you stop reading this blog. (I lied. It will. But it sounded better to write that it wouldn't!)

I will still be sharing the blog with Abby here so please visit us there.

Thanks for following me on this blog. It's been fun, and it still will be. It will just have more homeschool related posts from now on.

But I promise I won't be making my own bread or peanut butter, or cutting my kids hair. Those things do not excite me. Teaching my childern does though!

Books and a Ballgame

Yesterday Anna and I headed north. Well a little north.

We went to Searcy to the Homeschool Convention. I just love Searcy. The people are nice, the shopping is good and eating isn't bad either. It's such a nice town!

We ate lunch with my friend Kim. Kim and I have been friends for about 8 years. She has prayed for me and seen prayers answered. I have watched her ministry grow and seen her do some great work for the kingdom of God. I love her and it was great to get to spend a little bit of time with her over a yummy chef salad at the Cookie Basket.

Then Anna and I headed to the convention. I always go to this convention with my list of books I need for the next year. And then I get there, and I see all kinds of other books and curriculum I hadn't thought of and then my mind gets so full of information it almost explodes!!

I always work the used book sale so that I can shop the sale first with the other volunteers. It is definitely worth my time to volunteer when I see the money I save by getting to shop early.

We didn't leave until about 8:30. Stephen called and he and the boys were at a Travs game in North Little Rock so Anna and I stopped there. By the time we got there it was the 6th inning. Parking was free and so was admission. A free baseball game!

We missed getting to watch the boys brush off the bases between one of the innings though. Stephen said it was funny and the boys loved getting to be on the field. They have always signed up to do the games between the innings but this is the first time they've been picked.

After the game all the kids got to run the bases. I wish I had videoed Anna. She was so cute flying around those bases in her hot pink flip-flops!

We didn't get home until about midnight. Today we have a wedding to go to and hopefully we can get to bed at a normal time tonight. I have a feeling it will be the last time until we get back from vacation.
