The Write Foundation- A Review

I was given the opportunity to use The Write Foundation curriculum with my children and see what I thought. I was excited about getting this curriculum, since there is such a huge emphasis, as there should be, on writing in high school and college. I wanted a great curriculum to help my kids get off on the right foot.

The Write Foundation offers three levels of study. The first level is on sentence writing, the second level is on paragraph writing and the third is on essay writing. I chose the second level, paragraph writing, because it was recommended for ages 12-15. Samuel is a 13 year old 7th grader and I thought he would benefit from this study. David and Daniel are 9 years old, but I used it with them for a while also.

My overall opinion of The Write Foundation is that it is detailed, knowledgable, and organized. Although those all sound like postivies they aren't.

It took me a couple of days to go through the material and "get my head around it." There are many instructions to give and follow. I began with all three boys doing the study. After the first week, I allowed David and Daniel to drop out. It was too much for them.

The note taking at the beginning of lesson one was too difficult for them to follow. This is not neccessariily the curriculum's fault. I don't lecture and they don't take noted in a normal school day. So, note taking was a new process for them and I didn't give them clear instructions.

I continued with Samuel and have seen progress in his writing. I have stumbled my way through the teachers manual, which I think needs to be streamlined a bit. It seems to give a lot of information but not the information that I needeed.

Overall, the curriculum for Samuel has been useful and I will continue to use it to guide his writing.

The Paragraph Writing curriculum for lessons 1-15 is $65 and can be ordered from The Write Foundation . I'm thinking about using the sentence curriculum in a couple of years with Anna. I think it will be helpful, and a great resource to have on hand.

This review is my opinion as a member of the TOS Crew. I was given the curriculum in exchange for an honest review.

  1. The Sentance curriculum did look good too. We had to adjust the Essay one as well since I think the curriculum is geared toward a coop- but a little tweaking and we got it! Good review Julie :)
